## About PADD 1B (Central Atlantic) propane price

The Central Atlantic, PADD 1B, covers Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania and carries the biggest share of East Coast propane demand, concentrated upstate in New York and across Pennsylvania's rural counties rather than in the coastal cities, which run mostly on natural gas. Supply here is the most varied on the East Coast: Marcellus and Utica gas processing sit inside the region itself, import and pipeline terminals line the Delaware River and New York Harbor, and the Mariner East pipelines even carry Pennsylvania-produced propane the other direction, out to Marcus Hook for export.

That local production is why the Central Atlantic's retail-minus-wholesale spread, tracked on [Central Atlantic retail vs wholesale](/spreads/padd1b), tends to run tighter than New England's: a shorter average haul from source to rack. Because this sub-district carries the most East Coast volume, its reading tends to set the direction of the [PADD 1 aggregate](/region/padd1) above it more than the other two sub-districts do.

New Jersey's dense suburbs and New York City itself run overwhelmingly on natural gas, so the demand behind this district's number concentrates upstate in New York and across rural Pennsylvania, a geography this aggregate figure does not show but the [state pages](/state) behind it do.
