## About PADD 4 (Rocky Mountain) propane price

The Rocky Mountain region, PADD 4, covers Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming. Unlike most consuming regions, PADD 4 produces a meaningful share of its own propane: gas processing in Colorado's DJ Basin and Piceance, and in Utah's Uinta Basin, strips propane out of regional gas production, which leaves this region less dependent on long-haul Gulf Coast pipelines than the Midwest or East Coast are. That local supply does not make delivery cheap. Demand is spread thin across mountain counties, high plains and rural towns at elevation, where the heating season runs longer than the calendar alone would suggest and a delivery route can be a long one.

The result is a retail-minus-wholesale spread, on [Rocky Mountain retail vs wholesale](/spreads/padd4), shaped more by that dispersed, low-density delivery cost than by distance from the [Mont Belvieu spot price](/spot/mont-belvieu) the way it is in New England. Wyoming, this site's one unsurveyed PADD 4 state, reports no price of its own; the closest read on it is this regional line.

Colorado and Utah, the district's two most populous states, carry most of the demand behind this number; Montana and Idaho run smaller, more rural markets on longer average delivery routes, where a January storm can close a mountain pass and strand a delivery route for days rather than hours.
