## About Indiana propane prices

Indiana's propane demand splits between farms and rural homes. Grain dryers work hard in a wet fall across the corn and soybean counties, and home heating demand sits in the areas outside the gas mains that follow the interstate corridors. Supply comes up from the Gulf Coast by pipeline and off refineries in the region, with rail and truck filling in when winter demand outruns pipeline schedules.

This is a surveyed average rather than a quote. EIA polls a sample of Indiana propane dealers weekly through the October to March heating season and publishes the state figure Wednesday afternoon; the series then goes quiet until October. EIA also surveys a wholesale price for Indiana, plotted as the lower line. The distance between the two is the delivered-service stack, and it widens when the rack falls faster than dealers reprice. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey, on five-year estimates, puts propane as the main heating fuel in 7.2% of occupied Indiana homes, around the middle of the state rankings.

The regional numbers around this price are [Midwest propane prices](/region/padd2) and [Midwest propane stocks](/stocks/padd2), the inventory that has to cover the winter. A price per gallon is not a delivery ticket. The [propane usage calculator](/tools/propane-usage-calculator) estimates gallons burned and what a fill costs at the current Indiana survey price.

## Common questions

### What is the current propane price in Indiana?

EIA surveys residential propane prices only from October through March, so there is no current residential figure for Indiana right now. The wholesale (rack) price dealers pay in Indiana is $1.002/gal a gallon as of Mar 30, 2026, and the last surveyed residential price was $2.634/gal on Mar 30, 2026. The weekly survey restarts in October.

### When is propane most expensive in Indiana?

Residential propane runs highest in the middle of the heating season, ordinarily January and February, and cheapest through the summer while [Midwest stocks](/stocks/padd2) are building and nothing is drawing on them. The regional wrinkle is that the Midwest season starts before the thermostat does: propane fires grain dryers across the Corn Belt in October and November, and a wet harvest can pull volume hard weeks ahead of heating demand. [Why propane prices rise in winter](/guides/why-propane-prices-rise-in-winter) has the mechanics.

### What is the difference between the residential and wholesale price on this page?

The residential price is what a Indiana household pays for a delivered gallon: the dealer's own cost plus trucking, tank service and margin. The wholesale price is that dealer cost at the rack, before any of it. The gap between the two is the delivered-service stack, and [how propane is priced](/guides/how-propane-is-priced) walks through each layer of it.
