## About Massachusetts propane prices

More than half of Massachusetts homes heat with natural gas and a large share of the rest still burn heating oil, which leaves propane serving the towns and outer suburbs the mains never reached, plus a steady load of cooking, water heating and standby generators. The state has no propane production and no trunk pipeline: supply arrives by ship, rail and truck through coastal and river terminals. A hard cold snap here is a logistics problem before it is a supply problem.

The price above comes from EIA's State Heating Oil and Propane Program, which surveys a sample of retail dealers in Massachusetts once a week and publishes the state average on Wednesday afternoon. It runs October through March only, so nothing new prints between April and September. EIA publishes no wholesale price for Massachusetts, so the chart carries the residential line alone. The wholesale series runs at the regional level instead, on the [East Coast price page](/region/padd1). The Census Bureau's American Community Survey, on five-year estimates, puts propane as the main heating fuel in 4.5% of occupied Massachusetts homes, below the national middle.

The regional numbers around this price are [New England propane prices](/region/padd1a) and [New England propane stocks](/stocks/padd1a), the inventory that has to cover the winter. Estimate your fill cost with the [propane usage calculator](/tools/propane-usage-calculator), which works from tank size, gauge reading and what the household burns.

## Common questions

### What is the current propane price in Massachusetts?

EIA surveys residential propane prices only from October through March, so there is no current residential figure for Massachusetts right now. The [Mont Belvieu spot price](/spot/mont-belvieu) is the year-round wholesale benchmark, and the last surveyed residential price was $3.649/gal on Mar 30, 2026. The weekly survey restarts in October.

### When is propane most expensive in Massachusetts?

Residential propane runs highest in the middle of the heating season, ordinarily January and February, and cheapest through the summer while [New England stocks](/stocks/padd1a) are building and nothing is drawing on them. The regional wrinkle is that New England has no propane production and no trunk pipeline of its own, so a cold snap here shows up first as a delivery problem: barrels arriving by ship, rail and truck against a small storage base. [Why propane prices rise in winter](/guides/why-propane-prices-rise-in-winter) has the mechanics.

### Why is there no wholesale propane price for Massachusetts?

EIA publishes no state-level wholesale (rack) price for Massachusetts, so the chart above carries the residential line alone. The wholesale series runs at the regional level instead, on the [East Coast price page](/region/padd1), and the [Mont Belvieu spot price](/spot/mont-belvieu) is the national wholesale benchmark. [How propane is priced](/guides/how-propane-is-priced) walks through the delivered-service stack that separates a rack gallon from a delivered one.
