Demand runs across the Southern Tier, the North Country and the farm counties where the mains stop and winter is long. Supply comes from Marcellus gas processing to the south, from terminals on the Hudson and the harbor, and by rail. The city and its suburbs contribute almost nothing to the number: this is an upstate price. EIA builds this number by calling retail dealers in New York each week of the October to March heating season and averaging what they report, published Wednesday afternoon. The survey stops for the summer and picks back up in October.
