## About North Dakota propane prices

North Dakota produces its own propane. Bakken associated gas runs through processing plants that strip out the natural gas liquids, which makes the state unusual in the Midwest: a supply source rather than only a destination. That has not made its winters easy. Propane heats a high share of North Dakota homes, the cold is severe and sustained, and the pipelines and rail loading that move Bakken barrels out compete for the same production.

The figure above is EIA's weekly survey average for North Dakota, collected from retail dealers during the October to March heating season and published Wednesday afternoons. No survey runs in the warm months, so the last spring reading stands until the fall. Two lines run on the chart because EIA surveys North Dakota dealers on both sides of the sale: what they pay at the rack and what they charge a residential customer. The lower line moves first, and the retail line follows it with a lag measured in weeks. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey, on five-year estimates, puts propane as the main heating fuel in 13.5% of occupied North Dakota homes, the 5th highest share in the country. A hard winter is a bigger household event here than the national average suggests.

For context beyond one state, North Dakota sits in the Midwest district: [regional prices](/region/padd2) and [Midwest propane stocks](/stocks/padd2). Turning this price into a fill cost takes a tank size and a gauge reading; the [propane usage calculator](/tools/propane-usage-calculator) does that arithmetic and prefills the North Dakota price.

## Common questions

### What is the current propane price in North Dakota?

EIA surveys residential propane prices only from October through March, so there is no current residential figure for North Dakota right now. The wholesale (rack) price dealers pay in North Dakota is $0.846/gal a gallon as of Mar 30, 2026, and the last surveyed residential price was $1.700/gal on Mar 30, 2026. The weekly survey restarts in October.

### When is propane most expensive in North Dakota?

Residential propane runs highest in the middle of the heating season, ordinarily January and February, and cheapest through the summer while [Midwest stocks](/stocks/padd2) are building and nothing is drawing on them. The regional wrinkle is that the Midwest season starts before the thermostat does: propane fires grain dryers across the Corn Belt in October and November, and a wet harvest can pull volume hard weeks ahead of heating demand. [Why propane prices rise in winter](/guides/why-propane-prices-rise-in-winter) has the mechanics.

### What is the difference between the residential and wholesale price on this page?

The residential price is what a North Dakota household pays for a delivered gallon: the dealer's own cost plus trucking, tank service and margin. The wholesale price is that dealer cost at the rack, before any of it. The gap between the two is the delivered-service stack, and [how propane is priced](/guides/how-propane-is-priced) walks through each layer of it.
