## About Rhode Island propane prices

Rhode Island has the smallest propane market of any state EIA surveys. Natural gas serves most of the housing stock, and propane fills in around it: the rural western towns, cooking and water heating in homes that are otherwise on gas, and cylinder demand. Supply arrives through Providence and the terminals around Narragansett Bay, or over the road from Massachusetts and Connecticut.

EIA builds this number by calling retail dealers in Rhode Island each week of the October to March heating season and averaging what they report, published Wednesday afternoon. The survey stops for the summer and picks back up in October. EIA publishes no wholesale price for Rhode Island, so the chart carries the residential line alone. The wholesale series runs at the regional level instead, on the [East Coast price page](/region/padd1). The Census Bureau's American Community Survey, on five-year estimates, puts propane as the main heating fuel in 5.0% of occupied Rhode Island homes, around the middle of the state rankings.

For context beyond one state, Rhode Island sits in the New England district: [regional prices](/region/padd1a) and [New England propane stocks](/stocks/padd1a). The [propane usage calculator](/tools/propane-usage-calculator) will estimate your fill cost at this price: gallons per burner-hour from an appliance's rating, gallons a year, and how long a tank of a given size lasts between deliveries.

## Common questions

### What is the current propane price in Rhode Island?

EIA surveys residential propane prices only from October through March, so there is no current residential figure for Rhode Island right now. The [Mont Belvieu spot price](/spot/mont-belvieu) is the year-round wholesale benchmark, and the last surveyed residential price was $3.757/gal on Mar 30, 2026. The weekly survey restarts in October.

### When is propane most expensive in Rhode Island?

Residential propane runs highest in the middle of the heating season, ordinarily January and February, and cheapest through the summer while [New England stocks](/stocks/padd1a) are building and nothing is drawing on them. The regional wrinkle is that New England has no propane production and no trunk pipeline of its own, so a cold snap here shows up first as a delivery problem: barrels arriving by ship, rail and truck against a small storage base. [Why propane prices rise in winter](/guides/why-propane-prices-rise-in-winter) has the mechanics.

### Why is there no wholesale propane price for Rhode Island?

EIA publishes no state-level wholesale (rack) price for Rhode Island, so the chart above carries the residential line alone. The wholesale series runs at the regional level instead, on the [East Coast price page](/region/padd1), and the [Mont Belvieu spot price](/spot/mont-belvieu) is the national wholesale benchmark. [How propane is priced](/guides/how-propane-is-priced) walks through the delivered-service stack that separates a rack gallon from a delivered one.
