## About Texas propane prices

Texas produces more propane than any other state and burns very little of it at home. Mont Belvieu, the salt-cavern hub that prices US propane and loads most of its exports, sits just east of Houston. The retail market EIA surveys is a different thing entirely: ranch houses and small towns across the Hill Country, West Texas and the Panhandle, far enough from a gas main to run on a tank and far enough from the coast that the delivered price carries real freight.

The price above comes from EIA's State Heating Oil and Propane Program, which surveys a sample of retail dealers in Texas once a week and publishes the state average on Wednesday afternoon. It runs October through March only, so nothing new prints between April and September. EIA also surveys a wholesale price for Texas, plotted as the lower line. The distance between the two is the delivered-service stack, and it widens when the rack falls faster than dealers reprice. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey, on five-year estimates, puts propane as the main heating fuel in 2.9% of occupied Texas homes, below the national middle.

The regional numbers around this price are [Gulf Coast propane prices](/region/padd3) and [Gulf Coast propane stocks](/stocks/padd3), the inventory that has to cover the winter. Estimate your fill cost with the [propane usage calculator](/tools/propane-usage-calculator), which works from tank size, gauge reading and what the household burns.

## Common questions

### What is the current propane price in Texas?

EIA surveys residential propane prices only from October through March, so there is no current residential figure for Texas right now. The wholesale (rack) price dealers pay in Texas is $1.048/gal a gallon as of Mar 30, 2026, and the last surveyed residential price was $2.989/gal on Mar 30, 2026. The weekly survey restarts in October.

### When is propane most expensive in Texas?

Residential propane runs highest in the middle of the heating season, ordinarily January and February, and cheapest through the summer while [Gulf Coast stocks](/stocks/padd3) are building and nothing is drawing on them. The regional wrinkle is that the Gulf Coast is where most US propane originates, so retail here sits close to the hub and moves more on the Mont Belvieu price than on delivery cost. [Why propane prices rise in winter](/guides/why-propane-prices-rise-in-winter) has the mechanics.

### What is the difference between the residential and wholesale price on this page?

The residential price is what a Texas household pays for a delivered gallon: the dealer's own cost plus trucking, tank service and margin. The wholesale price is that dealer cost at the rack, before any of it. The gap between the two is the delivered-service stack, and [how propane is priced](/guides/how-propane-is-priced) walks through each layer of it.
