## About US propane exports by destination

This page breaks the export total on [US propane exports](/supply/exports) down by destination country, from EIA's monthly international trade data (a roughly two-month reporting lag, coarser than the weekly WPSR series the rest of this site's supply pages use). It shows where US barrels actually go: mostly East Asian and Latin American markets that lack their own gas processing or refining capacity, buying propane for petrochemical feedstock and residential and commercial heating and cooking alike.

The connection to a US retail price runs through the export total this page details, not around it: a cold snap or a petrochemical-demand surge in a top destination market lifts that country's buying, which shows up here as a bigger share of a shrinking pool of exportable barrels, tightens [Gulf Coast supply](/stocks/padd3) and firms [Mont Belvieu](/spot/mont-belvieu) the same way any other export surge does. A market this concentrated (see the concentration table below) also means a single large buyer's demand swings move the US wholesale benchmark more than a diffuse customer base would.

The buyer list has run fairly stable for years: East Asian economies, led by Japan, China and South Korea, together with Mexico and other Latin American markets, take the large majority of the total. The mix shifts gradually, as new import terminals or petrochemical capacity come online abroad, rather than week to week, which is why the concentration table below is worth reading over months, not against any single release.
