About PADD 1 (East Coast) propane price
PADD 1, the East Coast, is the sum of the three sub-districts this site also pages on their own: New England (1A), the Central Atlantic (1B, the biggest of the three by demand) and the Lower Atlantic (1C). Together they run from Maine to West Virginia. The region produces essentially no propane of its own, so the price here reflects delivery cost more than it does anywhere the barrel originates: pipeline and rail from the Gulf Coast and Marcellus gas processing, marine imports at coastal terminals, and truck the rest of the way. A hard winter shows up here first as a logistics story, trucks and terminal throughput, before it shows up as a supply story.
Because a PADD 1 gallon travels further than a Gulf Coast one, the retail-minus-wholesale spread tends to run wider here than in producing regions, tracked on East Coast retail vs wholesale. The three sub-districts do not move in lockstep: New England leans hardest on delivered fuel and carries no EIA wholesale line of its own (it reports into this PADD 1 line instead), the Central Atlantic carries the most volume, and the Lower Atlantic runs a milder, shallower season. The three sub-districts run their own weekly retail surveys on EIA's usual October-March calendar, published Wednesday afternoons, and this aggregate line is the volume-weighted average of the three: it gets pulled hardest by whichever sub-district is heating the most homes in a given week, ordinarily the Central Atlantic given its size.
