New York propane prices

New York has more propane-heated homes than any other state in the Northeast, nearly all of them upstate. Demand runs across the Southern Tier, the North Country and the farm counties where the mains stop and winter is long. Supply comes from Marcellus gas processing to the south, from terminals on the Hudson and the harbor, and by rail. The city and its suburbs contribute almost nothing to the number: this is an upstate price.

EIA builds this number by calling retail dealers in New York each week of the October to March heating season and averaging what they report, published Wednesday afternoon. The survey stops for the summer and picks back up in October. Two lines run on the chart because EIA surveys New York dealers on both sides of the sale: what they pay at the rack and what they charge a residential customer. The lower line moves first, and the retail line follows it with a lag measured in weeks. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey, on five-year estimates, puts propane as the main heating fuel in 4.9% of occupied New York homes, around the middle of the state rankings.
