About Alabama propane prices
Alabama's propane year is not driven mostly by home heating. The state is one of the country's largest broiler producers, and poultry houses burn propane for brooder heat through the cool months, a load that builds before residential furnaces do much of anything. Supply comes off the Gulf Coast system running east out of Mont Belvieu, including the Dixie pipeline, which crosses the state carrying propane toward the Carolinas.
EIA builds this number by calling retail dealers in Alabama each week of the October to March heating season and averaging what they report, published Wednesday afternoon. The survey stops for the summer and picks back up in October. The second line on the chart is the wholesale price Alabama dealers pay at the rack. What separates the two lines is the cost of getting a gallon into a tank behind a house, which is delivery, tank service and dealer margin together, not margin alone.
