Maine propane prices

Maine heats with delivered fuel more than any other state, and heating oil still takes the largest share of it. Propane has been picking up share as homeowners convert. There is no natural gas service across most of the state and no propane pipeline into it, so every gallon arrives by ship, rail or truck. Winter storms that close roads and ports are a supply risk here in a way they are not inland.

The price above comes from EIA's State Heating Oil and Propane Program, which surveys a sample of retail dealers in Maine once a week and publishes the state average on Wednesday afternoon. It runs October through March only, so nothing new prints between April and September. EIA publishes no wholesale price for Maine, so the chart carries the residential line alone. The wholesale series runs at the regional level instead, on the East Coast price page. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey, on five-year estimates, puts propane as the main heating fuel in 13.8% of occupied Maine homes, the 4th highest share in the country. A hard winter is a bigger household event here than the national average suggests.
