About Maine propane prices
Maine heats with delivered fuel more than any other state, and heating oil still takes the largest share of it. Propane has been picking up share as homeowners convert. There is no natural gas service across most of the state and no propane pipeline into it, so every gallon arrives by ship, rail or truck. Winter storms that close roads and ports are a supply risk here in a way they are not inland.
The price above comes from EIA's State Heating Oil and Propane Program, which surveys a sample of retail dealers in Maine once a week and publishes the state average on Wednesday afternoon. It runs October through March only, so nothing new prints between April and September. EIA publishes no wholesale price for Maine, so the chart carries the residential line alone. The wholesale series runs at the regional level instead, on the East Coast price page. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey, on five-year estimates, puts propane as the main heating fuel in 13.8% of occupied Maine homes, the 4th highest share in the country. A hard winter is a bigger household event here than the national average suggests.
For context beyond one state, Maine sits in the New England district: regional prices and New England propane stocks. Estimate your fill cost with the propane usage calculator, which works from tank size, gauge reading and what the household burns.
Common questions
What is the current propane price in Maine?
EIA surveys residential propane prices only from October through March, so there is no current residential figure for Maine right now. The Mont Belvieu spot price is the year-round wholesale benchmark, and the last surveyed residential price was $3.523/gal on Mar 30, 2026. The weekly survey restarts in October.
When is propane most expensive in Maine?
Residential propane runs highest in the middle of the heating season, ordinarily January and February, and cheapest through the summer while New England stocks are building and nothing is drawing on them. The regional wrinkle is that New England has no propane production and no trunk pipeline of its own, so a cold snap here shows up first as a delivery problem: barrels arriving by ship, rail and truck against a small storage base. Why propane prices rise in winter has the mechanics.
Why is there no wholesale propane price for Maine?
EIA publishes no state-level wholesale (rack) price for Maine, so the chart above carries the residential line alone. The wholesale series runs at the regional level instead, on the East Coast price page, and the Mont Belvieu spot price is the national wholesale benchmark. How propane is priced walks through the delivered-service stack that separates a rack gallon from a delivered one.
