Massachusetts propane prices

More than half of Massachusetts homes heat with natural gas and a large share of the rest still burn heating oil, which leaves propane serving the towns and outer suburbs the mains never reached, plus a steady load of cooking, water heating and standby generators. The state has no propane production and no trunk pipeline: supply arrives by ship, rail and truck through coastal and river terminals. A hard cold snap here is a logistics problem before it is a supply problem.

The price above comes from EIA's State Heating Oil and Propane Program, which surveys a sample of retail dealers in Massachusetts once a week and publishes the state average on Wednesday afternoon. It runs October through March only, so nothing new prints between April and September. EIA publishes no wholesale price for Massachusetts, so the chart carries the residential line alone. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey, on five-year estimates, puts propane as the main heating fuel in 4.5% of occupied Massachusetts homes, below the national middle.
