New Hampshire propane prices

New Hampshire leans on propane harder than any other state. Natural gas service reaches only a narrow band of the southern tier, most of the housing stock outside it burns delivered fuel, and propane has been taking share from heating oil for years. Every gallon arrives by truck or rail from terminals outside the state, so the delivered price carries a freight component a Gulf Coast reader would not recognize.

The figure above is EIA's weekly survey average for New Hampshire, collected from retail dealers during the October to March heating season and published Wednesday afternoons. No survey runs in the warm months, so the last spring reading stands until the fall. EIA publishes no wholesale price for New Hampshire, so the chart carries the residential line alone. The wholesale series runs at the regional level instead, on the East Coast price page. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey, on five-year estimates, puts propane as the main heating fuel in 19.2% of occupied New Hampshire homes, the highest share in the country. No state's households are more exposed to what happens to this price.
