Vermont propane prices

Vermont has almost no natural gas service. One utility serves the northwestern corner of the state and everywhere else heats with delivered fuel, which is why Vermont carries one of the highest propane heating shares in the country. There is no pipeline and no production: propane arrives by truck and rail from terminals in New York, Quebec and southern New England. Freight and winter road conditions are a live part of the delivered price.

The figure above is EIA's weekly survey average for Vermont, collected from retail dealers during the October to March heating season and published Wednesday afternoons. No survey runs in the warm months, so the last spring reading stands until the fall. EIA publishes no wholesale price for Vermont, so the chart carries the residential line alone. The wholesale series runs at the regional level instead, on the East Coast price page. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey, on five-year estimates, puts propane as the main heating fuel in 19.0% of occupied Vermont homes, the 2nd highest share in the country. A hard winter is a bigger household event here than the national average suggests.
