About United States propane price
This is EIA's national residential propane price: the weekly average across every state the State Heating Oil and Propane Program surveys, October through March, not a single national market. Its shape over a season is set by the coldest, heaviest-consuming states as much as by the mild ones, so a sharp Midwest or Northeast cold snap can move the US line more than the thermometer in most of the country would suggest. The survey goes quiet April through September, and the last reading holds until the fall restart.
The wholesale line on this chart is the national counterpart: dealers' average cost at the rack, before delivery, tank service and margin. The gap between the two is the delivered-service stack, measured week by week in the residential-minus-wholesale table above. Both lines sit above the physical source of the number, the Mont Belvieu spot price, which trades daily year-round and is where every regional rack price starts.
The figure itself comes from EIA's State Heating Oil and Propane Program, a weekly telephone survey of retail dealers in each of the 38 surveyed states, run October through March and published every Wednesday afternoon. This US line is the volume-weighted average of those state surveys, not a separate national poll, so it moves hardest when the states that use the most propane, mainly the Midwest and Northeast, turn colder. The state map breaks the figure back out by state and regional prices breaks it out by PADD.
The seven West Coast states in the table above make up PADD 5, the one district with no residential price line; the PADD guide defines all five districts.

Which region has the cheapest propane?
In the Oct 26, 2026 survey, PADD 2 (Midwest) had the lowest residential price of the four districts EIA surveyed, at $2.199/gal, and PADD 1 (East Coast) the highest, at $3.739/gal: a spread of $1.54 a gallon. The table above lists every one. Delivered prices also vary from house to house with tank ownership, volume and distance from supply.
When is propane most expensive in the US?
In EIA's weekly survey, which runs October through March, US residential propane set its season high in February in two of the last five heating seasons, March in two and January in one. The season low came in October in each of the last five heating seasons. From low to high the price moved an average of 26.5 cents a season, and the seasons table above lists each high and low week.
